Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has called for urgent Federal Government intervention to address concerns over the condition of a critical bridge linking Enugu State with Mbala community in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, warning of its importance to the livelihoods of residents and economic activities in the area.
Kalu made the call during plenary at the Senate, where he supported a motion moved by his colleague, Senator Osita Ngwu, on the state of the bridge and the challenges confronting communities that depend on the route.
The former Abia State governor, who disclosed that he visited the area last week, urged the Senate to sympathize with the people of Umunneochi and support measures to secure the Federal Government’s intervention.
He threw his weight behind all the prayers contained in the motion, stressing the need for the relevant authorities to address the concerns raised over the bridge’s condition.
Kalu noted that the bridge serves as a vital transportation link for traders, farmers and other residents whose daily activities depend on the free movement of people and goods between the affected communities.
He emphasized that the route plays a significant role in transporting agricultural produce and sustaining commercial activities, making its condition a matter of serious concern for the local population.
According to Kalu, Federal Government intervention would provide much-needed support to the affected communities, particularly farmers and traders whose livelihoods rely on the bridge for access to markets and other economic opportunities.
The former Senate Chief Whip’s intervention shows the importance of maintaining critical infrastructure that connects rural communities, promotes agricultural commerce and supports grassroots economic development.
With residents and business operators depending on the route for their daily activities, the call for urgent attention to the bridge has placed renewed focus on the need for appropriate government action to address the concerns raised by the lawmakers.
Kalu’s support for the motion reflects his position that the concerns of affected communities should receive the necessary attention, especially where infrastructure challenges directly affect livelihoods, mobility and local economic growth.
