The Senate on Tuesday suspended plenary to honour the memory of Senator Barinada Mpigi (Rivers South-East), who passed away on February 19, 2026, following what colleagues described as a sudden and shocking loss.
Leading his colleagues in a valedictory session, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu paid an emotional tribute to the late lawmaker, describing him not only as a distinguished parliamentarian but as a dear friend and brother.
”His passing came as a deep shock and a painful loss to all of us, but we bow in deep submission to the will of God,” Kalu said. “Senator Mpigi was more than just a colleague in the National Assembly; he was one of my dearest friends and a man whose sincerity, humility, and compassion touched everyone who came across him.”
Kalu eulogized the late Rivers South-East representative as a pragmatic and selfless leader, noting his accessibility to the people and dedication to the welfare of his constituents.
”I remember him as an awesome family man, a loyal friend, and a distinguished parliamentarian who carried himself with dignity and commitment to service,” Kalu added. “His contributions to legislative work and his passion for the progress of his people will never be forgotten.”
The Senate proceedings were subsequently suspended in honour of the late lawmaker, allowing members to reflect on his life and legacy.
Senator Mpigi, who was born on June 23, 1961, served with distinction in the 10th National Assembly as the Chairman of Senate Committee on Works and member of several other committees.
Kalu extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the government and people of Rivers State, and specifically the constituents of Rivers South-East who are mourning the loss of their representative.
”May the gentle soul of my dear friend rest in perfect peace,” Kalu prayed.
