Senator Dr. Orji Uzor-Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on South East Development Commission, has underscored the transformative potential of Nigeria’s cashew industry, urging for greater investment, innovation, and enhanced global trade participation.

Delivering the keynote address at the 4th Nigerian Cashew Day, represented by his Chief of Staff, High Chief Barr Emeka Nwala, Sen. Kalu emphasized the importance of unlocking the full potential of the sector to boost Nigeria’s economy and position the country as a global leader in cashew production.

The theme of the event, “Unlocking the Full Potentials of Nigeria’s Cashew Industry through Investment, Innovation and Global Trade,” resonated with the Senator’s vision for Nigeria’s agricultural future. He highlighted that while Nigeria is a major producer of raw cashew nuts, the industry still faces challenges in processing and value addition, with much of the value created from the cashew crop taking place outside of the country.
Kalu stressed that investment is the key to unlocking the sector’s full potential. He pointed out that Nigeria needs more processing plants, modern storage facilities, and improved logistics systems to enhance value addition. As the largest cashew investor in Nigeria through Igbere Food and Beverage Limited, he shared his personal conviction that the country must begin processing its own cashew nuts rather than relying on exporting raw materials.
“The experience we have gained through local processing has shown that it not only improves margins but also creates jobs, stabilizes farmer income, and enhances Nigeria’s competitiveness in global markets,” Kalu said.
Speaking on innovation, Kalu emphasized that technological advancements in seedling improvement, mechanized processing, quality control, and product diversification are vital for the growth of the industry. He outlined opportunities in the development of cashew-based products such as snacks, beverages, butter, and industrial by-products—adding new revenue streams and minimizing waste.
